I fear that training in conventional etiquette is severely lacking in our educational facilities today. Therefore it falls upon me (and any commentators) to explore a few simple rules. Etiquette is not, of course, universal and some of my opinions may not make sense for every situation, but with a modicum of care you can safeguard your burgeoning friendships and secure an excellent social reputation.

I heard an elegant explanation of the term “Significant Other” (or SO) the other day, and thought I should share it here.
A Significant Other is not an extra guest or your friend that wants to come too.
An SO is the other person whom it would be too rude not to invite if you have been invited.
Usually “you and your SO are invited” means, “you and your girlfriend (who’s name I can’t remember OR who’s email I don’t have OR whom I hate) are invited” and it is then left up to the guest to forward it on to the person that they simply cannot attend without.
